Speaker of Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has advised to name the school of V. Rakeedhoo after Mohamed Ibthihal, a boy who was murdered by his own mother.
This was said following a remark made by the Minister of Education who was summoned to the Parliament upon the request of the MP of Dhaandhoo constituency Yaugoob Abdulla.
The minister stated in response to a question asked by one of the MPs saying that, she observed a very disheartening situation in V. Rakeedhoo and that efforts are being made to build a school in the island. The minister said that surveys are ongoing to determine the feasibility of having a school in the island.
“I believe that it would be most appropriate to name the school after Ibthihaal, should one be built in Rakeedhoo” said Nasheed in response.
Rakeedhoo is an island of 400 people, where children have to travel to a nearby island to school everyday due to the island not having an established school. Ibthihaal was a little boy from the same island who was brutally murdered by his own mother, who is still in jail awaiting sentencing.
