Sri Lankan Presidential Elections commenced

Polls for the Presidential elections of Sri Lanka opened at 07:00 on Saturday morning and it has been reported that 15,992,092 have the right to vote in this election

Ismail Habeeb, member of Elections Commissions of Maldives will be observing the elections, announced the commission on Friday via a tweet, along with Indonesia, India, South Africa, Bhutan and Philippines.

While a total of 35 candidates are running to become president of the single island nation, rivalry is highest between the younger brother, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of former president of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sajith Premadasa of UNP party.

This is the 8th Presidential election held in the country, with the last election held in 2015.
