Former MP of Hithadhoo Dhekunu constituency has announced that he will be contesting as mayor of Addu City in this local council elections.
In an interview he gave to adduLIVE, he revealed that his decision to run for mayor was fueled by the requests of Addu City, and that he will be kicking off his campaigns with very fresh visions.
Nizar will be contesting on an MDP ticket, so his first challenge would be to win the party primary elections.
So far, the only other individual to have announced their candidacy is the the current mayor of Addu City, Abdullah Sodiq, who has also been the mayor for the past three terms.
Unlike previous terms, in this election the mayor would be elected separately while individual councilors would be elected from each constituency. The amendment to the decentralization act which would bring about this change is likely to be scheduled for debate in the parliament in early December.
The local council elections have been scheduled for April 4, 2020.
