Maldives confirms first local case of Covid-19

A Maldivian has tested positive for Covid-19 for the first time in the Maldives.

In a press conference held at Dharubaaruge, Male’, Minister of Healthm Abdullah Ameen revealed that a 38 year old male who returned from the UK tested positive for the coronavirus after being tested while in the quarantine facility in Holiday Island Resort.

He revealed that the patient was asymptomatic when he arrived in the Maldives on the 21st, but started showing flu like symptoms on the 25th, upon which he was administered the test.

While it was revealed that the patient was transferred to isolation upon becoming symptomatic, and despite social distancing protocols being followed during his transfer to the facility, authorities are in the process of contact tracing.

With this, the number of patients who have tested positive for the coronavirus in the Maldives has risen to 14.
