The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced that it would not be possible to hold the local council and Women’s Development Committee elections within the duration as required by the constitution of the country.
In a statement released by the commission on Monday, it said that while the elections had been postponed until 18th of April, the Ministry of Health of the country has decided to extend the medical state of emergency until the 30th of April.
It also said that while it is the responsibility of the Elections Commission to ensure that the voting environment is safe, ensuring the rights of voters to exercise their voting rights without fear, the commission would not be able to hold the elections within the required duration of the of constitution due to the extension of the medical state of emergency.
The commission also revealed that they would be announcing a decision on the election as soon as an adequate environment is established or a legal remedy has been found.
