Hulhumale’, Maldives – Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced that an employee of Fiyavathi – a government institution which looks after children – has tested positive for Covid-19, which has left 21 children and 11 individuals in quarantine.
Speaking at the Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC), Spokesperson of the Center, Senior Medical Officer of HPA, Dr. Nazla Rafeeq stated that the employee of the facility tested positive for the virus upon testing, as the individual was found to be a contact of a patient who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the IGMH cluster, while admitted at the hospital.
With this, 21 children and 11 staff of the facility have been quarantined in separate rooms of the Fiyavathi center, which have been designated quarantine rooms.
Dr. Nazla further revealed that the children quarantined from the facility are all aged between 6 and 11.
Taking a glance at the IGMH cluster, so far, a total of 15 individuals have tested positive for the virus from the hospital. The first spark of an outbreak in the hospital was noticed when an Indonesian cancer patient who was admitted in the hospital’s ICU tested positive for Covid-19 after his death.
With that three staff and other two patients in the ICU tested positive, which has now gone up to 7 patients, 2 by standers and 6 staff.
It is believed that the outbreak took place as a result of the hospital changing guidelines which were initially put in place to prevent Covid-19 infesting the hospital.
