Covid-19: Confirmed cases in Maldives surpasses 8,000

Malé, Maldives — Confirmed cases in Maldives surpasses 8,000 as the country recorda over 4,000 cases in just a month. 

HPA disclosed that, between 6pm of August 31, and 6pm of September 01, additional 199 people were confirmed for the virus in Maldives. They are:

  • 145 Maldivians
  • 42 Bangladeshis
  • 05 Indians
  • 03 Sri Lankans
  • 02 Americans
  • 01 Chinese
  • 01 Japanese

Among the confirmed 199 cases, 168 cases were found from the Greater Male’ area and the remaining 31 were from the atolls of Maldives.

With these 199 cases that were confirmed over the past 24 hours, Maldives now has a total of 8,003 confirmed Covid-19 cases, increased by over 4,000 in just a month. Currently among these cases, there are 2,703 active cases present in the Maldives.

Easing the lock-down measures in the Capital of Maldives, Malé city, has contributed a lot in increasing the number of confirmed cases in Maldives, contributing to over 90% of total cases.

Infact, the health authorities has warned of a wide community spread relating to the increase of the number of cases that are not linked to the existing clusters.

Previously the majority of the confirmed cases were of foreign nationals. However, since the lock-down easement on the capital city Malé, it has contributed a lot in increasing the number of confirmed cases for Maldivian nationals having the majority of the cases as well.

While 199 people tested positive for the virus today, 110 people have completely recovered from the virus over the past 24 hours according to HPA. Along with these 110 recoveries, the recovery cases in Maldives has now reached 5,265. The recovery rate of Maldives has decreased from 86% to 65% since the lock-down easement.

Up to date, 29 people have passed away from Covid-19 in Maldives. The deceased are 23 elderly Maldivian nationals, 5 Bangladeshi nationals and a Filipino national.

Currently there are 1,395 people in the isolation facilities of Maldives and 162 people are hospitalized due to the virus.
