550 people fined for curfew violation

Male’, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has revealed that 550 people have been fined for violating the curfew regulations set in the country.

As per the current curfew restrictions with regards to Covid-19, vehicular operation between 20:00 and 05:00 is not permitted while going out between 22:00 and 05:00 is also not allowed. Any violation would be met with a warning for first time offenders while repeated violations will have a consequence of being fined with MVR 1,000.

In addition to the curfew, those in Male’ are also required to wear face masks at all times while out in the public. A violation of this regulation also has the same consequences as that to curfew violations.

Police detailed that from 22nd August to 4th September, 1,143 people were given verbal warnings while 550 were fined for the violations, meaning that MVR 55,000 has been collected by the institutions in just curfew violation fines alone.

The restrictions were put in place due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the country, of which the total recorded cases in the country is at 8,900.
