Hanimaadhoo, Maldives – The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started working on the Hanimaadhoo International Airport expansion project, which is considered as one of the largest infrastructure and connectivity projects in Maldives.
The airport project is funded by the Exim Bank of India and is worth $800 million, which is funded by the line of credit extended by the bank to Maldives. According to authorities, the detailed project is to be completed within the next two months and initial implementation scheduled to start in early 2021.
Under the project, upgrading of terminals, establishment of fuel farms and fire stations have been planned to be carried out as well as the extension of the airport’s runway to 2,200 meters to allow aircrafts such as Airbus 320 and Boeing 737s.
Earlier in September, India also extended a $250 million loan to the Maldives Government to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19.
