Male’, Maldives – Former Vice President of the Maldives Ahmed Adeeb has been transferred to house arrest from jail.

Maldives Correctional Service’s spokesperson said that Adeeb was transferred to house arrest after taking his health condition into consideration. However, he refused to give further details.

The state had pressed seven charges against Adeeb for his part in the Maldives Media and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement case, and was held in Malé Jail under the order of the Criminal Court until a verdict is announced. The seven charges pressed against him were two charges of being an accomplice to embezzlement, two charges of money laundering, two charges of misuse of official capacity to obtain an undue advantage and one charge of abuse of power.

He has confessed to all the seven charges in the last hearing which was held on the 30th of September. He has also requested for leniency in his verdict under the plea deal he has agreed to with the state.
