Former High Court judges passport seized

Male’, Maldives – Former Immigration Controller and High Court judge Hassan Ali’s passport has been seized as he is being investigated by the Presidential Commission on unknown Deaths and Disappearances (DDCOM).

He is being investigated for accusations of preparing forged documents which tried to show that the murdered Maldivian journalist Ahmed Rilwan had left Maldives while Hassan Ali was the immigration controller of Maldives.

Hassan Ali was also questioned by Judicial Service Commission (JSC) while he was a sitting judge of Maldives High Court on the same case and he was given time to answer for the accusations but Hassan Ali resigned from judgeship without doing so.

Ahmed Rilwan who was a journalist for the Maldives Independent who wrote about corruption and Islamist militancy was abducted in August 2014. It was announced by the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances in September 2019 that he was killed by a local affiliate of al-Qaeda. The case is still being investigated by the presidential commission among with other 27 such cases.
