Malé, Maldives — The government has extended the state of public health emergency by an additional month, on Tuesday evening.

An announcement by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), revealed that the extension is until the 5th of November. While the previous extension, which was made on September 6, expired on Tuesday, HPA has for the eighth time decided to extend the health emergency.

To ensure the safety of the people and curb the spread of Covid-19 in Maldives, this extension was recommended by the Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru.

Although the number of daily confirmed cases have decreased in Maldives, the public health authorities have noted that the risk of the pandemic has still not decreased and is spreading extensively as well. Therefore, extending the health emergency period will help the authorities to strengthen measures in the country.

This is the first time in history that the island nation had made such a declaration.
