Male’, Maldives – Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Ali Hashim has stated that the Maldives has officially requested PayPal to provide their services in Maldives while giving a presentation about the Payment Systems and Payment Services Bill.

Governor Hashim said that the establishment of the new payment system which will be developed to ISO of 222 standards would allow companies such as PayPal to provide their services in the country. He also said that MMA and BML had written to PayPal requesting them to provide their incoming payment services to Maldives.

“We are slowly building the pressure. But the decision is theirs, not our decision. Our decision would be telling that our system are ready and that they can connect to ours now” Governor Hashim told.

PayPal services have been a long awaited service to a lot of Maldivians, specially the youths who are doing online businesses. There are several online campaigns which are still ongoing pressuring the government and MMA to provide the services in Maldives as well.

Speaking after a ceremony held at Crossroads Maldives to launch BML’s MasterCard in 2019, Governor Hashim had said that the full use of the services offered by PayPal can be made by making laws through the parliament and making regulations.

With the current Payment Systems and Payment Services Bill in parliament, Governer has said that all such issues being faced should be resolved making payment faster and easier for all levels of businesses.
