Minister Shahid greets UN on its 75th anniversary

Male’, Maldives – Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Shahid has sent a special message on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.

Minister said that the significance of United Nations is seen due to the unprecedented global health crisis created by COVID-19. He also said that Maldives has always remained steadfast in the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, calling for global peace, economic prosperity and sustainable development for all and that fir  Maldives, the UN has remained a true and reliable partner for fifty-five years since joining the UN in 1965, soon after independence.

In addition to this, Minister Shahid said that even though size may constitute a perennial consideration for small states, Maldives has an equal voice to contribute to the international community and that the track record at the UN is a testament that small states are not only valuable partners, but part of the solution to address the threats facing our world, especially the new and emerging threats of the 21st century.

 

Minister further said that for 75 years, the UN has stood as the universal body for globalization and multilateralism as a beacon that inspires and drives global solidarity and that as they navigate through the current challenges, in the true spirit of the UN, the unwavering faith in the organisation, in pursuit of a better future will not cease to exist. He also mentioned that despite the challenges globally, the UN ensures that everyone is connected, and with mutual respect and understanding, together the desirable future can be achieved.
