Male’, Maldives – Opposition parties, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition have announced that they are preparing to file a no confidence motion against the Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdullah.
While signatures of at least ten Members of the Parliament are required the pass have the motion filed, the total number of PPM and PNC MPs within the Parliament stand one MP short of the required quota. While confirming that the parties are indeed moving for the motion, Spokes Person of PPM did not specify the details of how they plan to gather the minimum requirement of signatures.
The announcement came after Minister Imran came under fire for implying that a woman being gropes is a trivial matter when he said that it is something that can happen in a public place, without someone even knowing, as he spoke on a radio program broadcasted by local radio channel ‘Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu’.
Since then, Imran has taken to Twitter attempting to shift the blame on the mainstream media, claiming that his words have been twisted and that he did not say that sexual assault is not such a big deal. However, outpour of anger continue to be directed towards Minister Imran, despite his apology for “any words which might have implied otherwise.”
