Male’, Maldives – President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has congratulated the people of Addu and Fuvahmulah for being designated as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.
In a tweet sent out by the President, he said that this designation would help preserve the country’s diverse natural assets, and thanked International Union on Conserving Nature (IUCN Maldives) and USAID for assisting in making the applications successful.
Both cities were granted the Biosphere Reserve status on on Thursday during the 32nd session of the UNESCO International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme, in which Addu City, Fuvahmulah City and the Ministry of Environment of Maldives participated remotely.
During the meeting, the Minister of Evironment, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, and Mayor of Addu City Abdullah Sodiq addressed the gathering. With this, Maldives now has three biosphere reserves in the country.
