Looking forward to take the U.S-Maldives partnership to another level: Secretary of State Pompeo

Washington, U.S – The United States Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo has said that the United States deeply valued the friendship with Maldives and that the U.S was looking forward to take the parnership to the next level.

Secretary of State, Pompeo tweeted this saying that he had a great meeting with the President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and that he made the historic announcement of opening the American Embassy in the Maldives. Since the 90s, this is the first official trip a member of the government of America made to Maldives. According to the Maldivian government, this was one of the central topics of discussion during the official trip of Pompeo.

Pompeo arrived to Maldives on October 28 after he attended the “Indo-Pacific Alliance” meeting in India. According to the Presidents Office, Pompeo will be discussing about the plan for a resident embassy of the United States in Maldives.

Maldives currently receives services from the United States through an American Embassy located in Sri Lanka. However, a plan to build an embassy in Maldives will ease things for the country as well as strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

Regarding this matter, the President’s Office stated that the opening of a U.S embassy in Maldives shows that the efforts of Maldives in building strong relationships with other countries is successful.

The government also stated that the United States Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo’s visit to the Maldives would increase the reputation of Maldives within the international community and that it would strengthen the efforts of promoting the Maldives sovereign and foreign policies in the region.
