Male’, Maldives – Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) has said that they have submitted a proposal to provide financial assistance from the national budget to political parties with less than 10,000 members.
Speaking on RaajjeTv’s “Fala Suruhee” program, EC member Fuad Thaufeeq said that greatest challenge faced by political parties was inadequate funding and that the new proposal to provide financial assistance to parties is to resolve their financial problems.
He added that this proposal will not cause any significant blows to the National Budget, and that the money will be sent to currently eligible parties through the existing system that is used to distribute funds to political parties from their allocated portion in the National Budget.
The proposal classifies any party with less than 10,000 members eligible for financial assistance. Currently, funding is provided only to parties with 10,000 members or more. The 3 parties that receive money from the national budget as of now are Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhooree Party (JP).
