Male’, Maldives – During a large drug operation in Male’, Maldives Police Service have arrested 10 individuals with over 70 kilograms of drugs.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has said today that parts of Fareedhee Magu have been closed off to carry out a large scale narcotics investigation.

He revealed that a sizable amount of smuggled drugs have been confiscated from a car parked in that area, and that police are now obtaining forensic evidence from the vehicle.

Hameed revealed that it has now been a week since the Police’s Drug Enforcement Department (DED), Intelligence and Marine Police have been carrying out this joint operation both on land and on sea.

CP Hameed added that some work in this operation is still ongoing.

This comes after recent publish backlash after an Individual convicted of smuggling 24 kilograms of drugs with a street value of MVR 100 million made headlines for being released after serving just 3 years of his 25 year life sentence.

Drug abuse is considered the root of many other crimes in the Maldives, and many are alarmed at the recent leniency of the government when dealing with such cases, with 7 people arrested during a drug bust released by the court last Sunday.
