Male’, Maldives – Former President and Current Speaker of Parliament has described his predecessor, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s 30 year rule as extremely cruel.

Nasheed stated this while answering a question posed by a viewer on a program held in collaboration by the Maldivian Parliament and Public Service Media (PSM) called “Ask the Speaker”, about Former President Yameen’s transfer to house arrest.

However, he did not give a direct answer to the actual question and said that while President Maumoon was not convicted and jailed, this in no way implies that Maumoon did not commit any crimes during his presidency.

Explaining why Maumoon was not tried and imprisioned for his alleged crimes, Nasheed said that their aim was to run a proper government and not to repeat history.

He added that most Maldivians do not condone heinousness against former Presidents of they country.

While Maumoon was not imprisoned during Nasheed’s presidency, he was summoned to Maldives Police Service multiple times for ongoing investigations at the time.
