ROOT branch in Addu burglarized

Addu City, Maldives – A branch of ROOT – a well known tobacco chain in the Maldives, had their Maradhoo Branch broken into and burglarized earlier today.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) have said that a large amount of cash and items have been stolen, but have not revealed details of the taken stock.

Police said that this was reported early morning today, and that no arrests have been made yet regarding the case, with Police stating that they are currently investigating this case.

Burglaries and robberies have drastically increased as of late, with Mohamed Nihad, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP for Feydhoo Constituency, previously saying in parliament said that everything from outdoor units of air conditioners to kitchen pans were being stolen, and that women are robbed for their jewelry at knife point in their own homes.

“This is the truth everyone can see this happening and it does not only occur in Feydhoo” MP Nihad said.

ROOT’s Male’ branch was also the target of an attempted heist last October, when four men attempted to steal MVR 4.2 million that was being taken to the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) from ROOT.

However, due to efforts by ROOT employees, onlookers and especially a BOC security guard, the heist was foiled, with the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office pressing charges against the 4 perpetrators.
