Malé, Maldives – The Maldives Elections Commission (EC) has started training for Local Council Elections, with mock elections procedures incorporating Health Protection Agency (HPA) guidelines. This training program aims to understand the logistics and timing on the election day which would be unlike previous elections as it is held during the pandemic

The Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections will be held on the 10 April 2021 in accordance with the Local Council Elections Special Provision Act 2020. The preparations for the elections began from 29 January 2021.
The EC has announced the deadline for changing voting districts for citizens as 08 February 2021 and advises applying for national identity cards before the election.
While he first amendment to the Local Council Elections Special Provision Act 2020 requires relevant authorities to move forward with the election process despite the current health emergency, it also requires that the proceedings should be held per the guidelines set forth by the Director General of Public Health.
