Malé, Maldives – Prosecutor General of Maldives Hussain Shameem has stated that the PG office is currently working on appealing the Criminal Court’s ruling to release Ali Waheed’s passport.

This comes after major public outrage, following Ali Waheed’s swift departure out of the country upon the release of his passport.

In a tweet sent out by PG Shameem, he said that the ruling of the court was received by the PG office at 11:30 of Thursday, and that the appeal must be made within 48 hours from that time, and that while efforts are underway to complete the task, the PG office is yet to receive the documents with regards to the appointment of a guarantor to Ali Waheed’s return.

Ali Waheed, who has been charged with seven different counts of violence of sexual nature, including attempted rape fled the country after the court granted the release of his passport, accepting his request to seek ‘urgent medical care’, after placing his close friend and State Minister of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Asadh Ali as his guarantor.

With this, the government is under heavy fire of criticism, stressing the lack of justice victims of abuse, specially of sexual nature, receive in the country.
