Murdered teenagers body brought back to Maldives after postmortem

Malé, Maldives – Body of Ahmed Udhayyu, the 17 year-old stabbed to death in GA. Maamendhoo, has been brought back from India after postmortem examination.

The 17 year olds body was sent to Medical College Hospital in Trivandrum, India on February 16, 2021. Police had earlier stated that Udhayyu’s body was to be examined to identify the exact cause of death as well as to gain information relevant to any questions that may be posed during the investigation and trial into the murder. 

Till date, police have arrested a total of five suspects over the stabbing, including three men, aged 18, 23 and 27, arrested under a court order and two local males, aged 18 and 25, taken into shortly after the initial arrests.

As per local media reports, the 17-year-old was attacked and killed over a dispute between two island gangs. News outlet Mihaaru reported that the juvenile was murdered in the second violent altercation which took place on Maamendhoo last week, in retaliation for a fight in which the minor had participated in.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed stated that further investigation into the matter would be led by the Serious Organised Crime Department of Crime Investigation Command. The commissioner urged the residents of Maamendhoo to offer full cooperation to the police as they conduct the investigation.
