Maldives’ ‘Telikilaas’ wins UNESCO Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation

Male’, Maldives — The ‘Telikilaas’ program conducted by the Education Ministry of Maldives has won the UNESCO Wenhui Award for educational innovation in Asia Pacific region.

Themed, “Educational Innovation in Response to Pandemic and Other Emergencies”, the Wenhui Award 2020 was  jointly created by the UNESCO Asia Pacific Program of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) and the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO in 2010.

The award show recognizes and rewards individuals or institutions in the Asia Pacific region that have made outstanding contributions to educational innovation.

Maldives’ ‘Telikilaas’ program won this year’s UNESCO Wenhui Award for educational innovation in Asia Pacific region along with cash prize of USD 20,000.

The ‘Telikilaas’ program of Maldives was introduced on March 15, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic to help the students learn despite the closure of schools via broadcasted lessons. The program was launched in an effort to ensure that the education of Maldivian students does not go uninterrupted even during a pandemic.

Under this program, the teachers will be broadcasting lessons to students through local channels such as PSM’s Munnaaru channel, YES TV, and Dhivehi Channel.

The Ministry expressed appreciation for the participation of parents in ensuring their children were present to the lessons and stated that the this program was a success due to the hard work and creativity, innovative vision of the teachers in Maldives.
