Male’, Maldives — The current Speaker of the Parliament and the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the Flat Committee created by the President does not have the right to release the permanent flat owners list.

Speaker Nasheed elaborated on the three responsibilities in detail and informed that one responsibility of the Flat Committee is presenting President Solih with a solution after investigating the complaints of the citizens regarding the housing project, adding that the flats were given against the given rules to certain citizens.
Along with this, Speaker Nasheed said it is also a responsibility of the Flat Committee to review the flat holders list who received flats under the “Hiyaa Project” and ensure that the flats were given in accordance to the rules, and if not, then finding out who was involved in carrying out the process and telling the President of what should be done to those who went against the rules.
The third responsibility of the Flat Committee according to Speaker Nasheed is reviewing the progress of the “Hiyaa Project”, Housing Project and the Gulhifalhu Housing Project and to advise President Solih about providing the rightful flat applicants with flats as fairly as possible.
He summarized that the responsibility of the Flat Committee is advising the President.
Minister Aslam spoke after Nasheed and said that the Housing Ministry is required to implement flat allocation processes since the Flat Committee has released the flat owners list, to which, Speaker Nasheed interrupted Minister Aslam and stated that it is not the responsibility of the Flat Committee to decide who will get the flats but a responsibility of the Housing Ministry.
Speaker Nasheed stated that finalizing permanent flat owners and releasing the list is not the responsibility of the Flat Committee.
