Malé, Maldives – Speaker of the Parliament and the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has stated Maldivian people would regret if they sway away from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Speaking at the gathering to launch the MDP candidate for Hulhumalé constituency in the upcoming local council elections, Rizna Zareer’s campaign office, Speaker Nasheed that every time Maldivians have distanced themselves from MDP, that people have regretted it and that history would prove it.

He went on to add that MDP will be the party to take people to a safe destination and that they had a long way to do it for the people. Speaker Nasheed’s remarks come after longtime MDP members have been leaving the party stating that the party was not inline with what they had been advocating for the people and that MDP was slowly failing to deliver its presidential pledges.

Speaker Nasheed who is also the President of MDP had previously stated that after a successful local council, the citizens will no longer have to complain over things saying that they aren’t fulfilled as there will be no further excuses the government can give after they receive all the power from the council.

As council elections are around the corner, people have been criticizing MDP and President Solih for the slow development and also the slow rate of delivering the presidential pledges. Criticism over government’s statement that they need majority in council elections have also been high with MDP leading the government coalition and with their super majority in the parliament.
