Leaked UTF draft agreement was sent by India: Umar Naseer

Malé, Maldives – Former Home Minister of Maldives Umar Naseer has claimed that the draft Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF) agreement which has been leaked is the one sent to the Maldives by India.

Detailing his claims made during a program about the leaked document, Umar said that the document was sent to the Maldives by the Indian government on 22 June 2020, and that it was leaked as sent by India.

He added that only the Maldivian government would know whether any amendments were brought to the agreement and called onto the Maldivian government to be released.

The document on the internet right now is as it was sent by the Indian government of 22nd June.

He further went on to claim that the agreement was sent at a time when the Maldives was at a delicate state due to Covid-19, and that the aim of India was to make Maldives sign the agreement during the situation.

During the program, Umar Naseer also said that he would bring an end to the agreement no matter the cost, and said that Maldivians are capable of making tough decisions and referred to the GMR agreement for which to be cancelled, Maldives had to pay USD 270 million.
