Malé, Maldives – Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail has stated that businesses should be able to decrease the number of employees when companies are in loss.

Minister Fayyaz said this due to accusations made by a person concerning the amendment to the Article 21(c) Employment Act of Maldives. The person claimed that the change was made deliberately by Minister Fayyaz, to enslave the workers of the Maldives and that due to this, the job security of the people in tourism industry has been lost.

Minister Fayyaz also stated that along with job security, when in loss, businesses should be able to reduce the number of employees and that this is present in the laws now.

If abused, there is chance of correcting it by involving the court. There’s no escape to it.

In the rectification of the law, it states that if an owner wants to stop the business, or if the business is in loss and does not make profit, the employers can choose to terminate employees from their jobs.

This alteration has been made because owners wanting to discontinue businesses, or businesses being in loss are good enough reasons to remove employees in the business.
