Council-elect meets with Addu City Council

Addu City, Maldives – Mayor-elect, Ali Nizar and elected council members have held an introductory meeting with the current council of Addu City.

The meeting held at the Addu City Council office today and was participated by the mayor-elect, Ali Nizar, all the elected council members and the current council members of Addu City.

The meeting came after the Mayor-elect, Ali Nizar held a separate meeting with the current Mayor, Abdulla Sodiq and other council members of the city. According to Addu City Council, transitional processes and procedures were discussed between the two mayors for the new council.

The former MP of Hithadhoo South Constituency had won the election with 7,434 votes while PPM candidate Latheef had gotten 4, 226 votes. Independent candidate Ibrahim Thohir got 345 votes.

Mayor-elect, Nizar had previously said that his work as the city’s mayor will be do meet the high expectations of Addu people. Nizar also added that even though that PPM and independent candidates had been elected for Addu City council that this was no issue for him and that he will always put forth the interests of the people of Addu City. 

He also told that he will be a mayor who listens to the people and make major decisions following public consultations. 

In the previous three elections, MDP has won all seats in the city council resulting in 100% super majority. However, this election, the opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has won three seats in the council while three seats were won by independent candidates.
