Terrorist attack was aimed for Speaker Nasheed: Police

Malé, Maldives—Maldives Police Service has stated that the information gathered till now points out that the explosion that took place early Thursday evening was a terrorist attack aimed at Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed.

Maldives Police Service released a statement regarding the explosion which went off around 20:20 tonight left Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed injured while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City.

Police stated that they are taking top priority into investigating the matter with the help of all the resources the service can get from the investigation and forensic facilities of the Maldives.

To assist the government in investigating the matter, two expertise on behalf of the Australian Federal Police are expected to arrive to the Maldives tomorrow, while Maldives Police are already receiving help from two professionals from the United Kingdom.

If any individual has noticed any type of suspicious activity at the scene last night, Police has encouraged them to come forward and share the information regarding the matter through the hotline 9704000. Police ensured the confidentiality of the information.

Speaking in an address to the nation following the incident last night, President Solih told that the perpetrators would face the full force of the law and that the government would take every necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of the people.

President Solih had also revealed that government would receive assistance from the Australian Federal Police in the investigation into the explosion and that they would arrive on Saturday to aid Maldives’ authorities in the investigation.

ADK Hospital had revealed last night that the Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed was brought to the hospital at 20:30 tonight and that he is being treated by a multi specialty medical team.
