Malé, Maldives – ADK Hospital explains the 16 hour surgeries and after care at Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Former President and Speaker Nasheed in a press conference being held today.

Doctors explain that Nasheed was brought in with heavy bleeding, and both internal and external shrapnel injuries. Ball bearings were found in Nasheed’s chest, near the heart. Injuries caused by these projectiles caused life threatening damage to the chest area. Nasheed endured major injury to the fourth rib, with a blade going through a lung.

Internal injuries caused major internal bleeding, approximately 600ml of blood was removed from the abdominal area.

The abdominal area had projectile and ball bearing injuries. A ball bearing went through the intestine, however, due to Ramadan fasting, minimal intestinal matter was released into the abdomen leading to low chances of infection.

External injuries include projectiles embedded in his left elbow, a piece of projectile going through the knee, and projectiles in the upper legs missed major arteries, veins and nerves.

Nasheed is now off ventilator, breathing on his own. Nasheed is currently in stable condition. The medical team will keep monitoring Nasheed in the CCU.

An IED explosion went off around 20:20 on 6 May leaving Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed injured while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition to him, 3 more people have also been reported to be injured from the explosion.
