Addu City, Maldives – Ali Nizar was sworn in earlier today as the Mayor of Addu City.

The new mayor and new city council was sworn in at a ceremony held at Addu High School this morning.

Nizar had competed with PPM candidate Mohamed Latheef and independent candidate Ibrahim Thohir and won with 61 percent votes.

Former Parliament Member of Hithadhoo Dhekunu constituency Ali Nizar won MDP primary elections with a staggering difference of 1532 votes, defeating the 3 term mayor Abdulla Sodiq and proceeded to win the mayoral elections as well.

In the previous three local council elections, MDP has won all seats in the city council resulting in 100% super majority. However, this year, the opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has three seats in the council while another three seats are now occupied by independent candidates.
