Malé, Maldives – MP for Thulhaadhoo Constituency Hisaan Hussain has reiterated that leaking confidential information national security is an offence as per the Armed Forces Act 2008 (Act No. 1/2008) and Maldives Penal Code (Law No. 6/2014).

MP Hisaan said this at a parliamentary debate on controversial article with the headline “MNDF informed Nasheed that security cannot be provided for Kenereege” providing certain security details about former President including current Speaker Mohamed Nasheed’s home and MNDF security protocols on 28 May 2021.

She said that the parliament wants to investigate the matter for three reasons. First, the fact that the information is available to only a specific few individuals in the defence forces. Second, impeding the security of a high-risk individual by disclosing confidential security details. Third, a breach in the armed forces, who are prohibited from sharing confidential information except with specific individuals as stated by the law, under Article 24 of the Armed Forces Act 2008 (Act No. 1/2008).

The parliamentarian said that these are the reasons for the 241 committee probe into the article, as it is important to find out who is responsible for such acts that may affect national security.

MP Hisaan said that it is the responsibility of the parliament to investigate such matters and an act to preserve the freedom of media by holding everyone accountable.
