Govt. proposes amendment to forego council approval in appointing Secretary General

Malé, Maldives – Amendments have been proposed to the Civil Services Act (Act no. 05/2007) and Decentralization Act (Act no. 07/2010) to remove council influence in the selection process for the Secretary General Position.

The most recent 8th amendment to the Decentralization Act says that the highest administrative position in the Council, the Secretary General position will be chosen by the Civil Services Commission with the advisement from the local councils.

MP of Gemanafushi Constituency, Ahmed Saeed cited that the Civil Services Act states transparency, fairness and removal of political bias in the selection of Civil Servants.

Therefore, the amendments sponsored by MP Saeed proposes to remove the say of the council and leave the job allocation for Civil Services Commission. He proposed amendments to Civil Services Act (Act no. 05/2007) and Decentralization Act (Act no. 07/2010) to this effect.
