Covid-19: GDh. Thinadhoo records first death, total fatalities at 173

Malé, Maldives – Two patient admitted at GDh. Thinadhoo Covid-19 faciity and Hulhumalé Covid-19 Facility respectively in have passed away due to Covid-19.

Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital located in GDh. Thinadhoo reports that 05:30 today, an 88 year old Maldivian man admitted at Thinadhoo Covid-19 Facility has passed away. This is the first Covid-19 related death recorded in the region.

In addition, Health Protection Agency (HPA) informs that at 12:48 am today, a 62 year old Maldivian man admitted at HMF succumbed to Covid-19.

With the two deaths, the Covid-19 death toll in the Maldives is currently at 173.

While Maldives had recorded 704 cases yesterday according to the statistics released by HPA, it was detailed that 407 were from the Malé area, while 271 cases were recorded from inhabited islands. The figures also included 18 case from operational resorts and 08 cases from islands under development which brought the total active cases in the country to 23,909.

With this, the total number of Covid-19 cases recorded in the country has reached 65,868 out of which 41,779 patients have made full recoveries, as of 18:00 of June 2, 2021. 

While the country is currently going through one of the worst waves that has hit the country in terms of the pandemic, currently there are 197 patients receiving hospitalized care for the virus throughout the country. With majority of the hospitalized patients being in the capital, experts continuously reiterate the importance of taking preventive steps against Covid-19, such as maintaining adequate physical distancing, wearing masks and practicing hand hygiene.
