Islamic Ministry to take action against Imams holding congregational Friday prayers

Malé, Maldives – The Islamic Ministry of Maldives, today, stated that they will take action against any Imams registered with the ministry who lead Friday prayers in congregation.

They said this after some mosques held congregational prayers yesterday. The two mosques are reported to be Furuqan Mosque in Malé and Umar bin Al Khattab Mosque in Hulhumalé. The Islamic Ministry is investigating these two mosques and others who held congregational prayers in this period where it is banned due to the surge in Covid-19 cases. The ministry reports that civilians are responsible for these actions.

Islamic Ministry also assured that the Maldives Police are authorized to take action in cases of congregational prayers, starting from May 12. During this period, the mosques are still open for individual prayers and calls for prayer are made for daily prayers.
