MayTerrorAttack: Additional 3 suspects present among counterterrorism operations detainees

Malé, Maldives –Local Media Outlet “Mihaaru” has informed that they have received information that additional three direct contacts of the terrorist attack against Speaker Nasheed are present among the extremists who were arrested during the Police operation conducted against extremism and terrorism.

Speaking at the press conference held on Tuesday by the President’s Office, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that the case is closely monitoring the progress of the inquiries. President Solih shared important information he received from Police authorities three days ago, disclosing that investigation on eight direct contacts of the terrorist attack are currently proceeding swiftly.

Police informed President Solih that the investigation on four of these people are expected to finish soon, after which they will be sent for prosecution to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

While President Solih informed that investigation on eight direct contacts of the terrorist attack are ongoing, earlier Police only mentioned that five direct contacts of the attack were arrested.

“Mihaaru” informs that along with these five people, three additional extremists directly related to the attack are in Police custody. These people were arrested during the operations conducted against extremism and terrorism.

After the May 6 terror attack, the police said that there would be a crackdown on terrorists and terrorism supporters, including those posting such content on social media and supporting terrorism on media comment sections as well.

An IED explosion went off around 20:20 on 6 May leaving Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed critically injured while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition to him, 3 more people were also been reported to be injured from the explosion including the Speaker’s bodyguards and bystanders.
