Malé, Maldives – The latest statistics from the Finance Ministry revealed that the government received MVR 119 million as various types of fine payments from January 1, 2021, to July 1, 2021.

The government received MVR 69.4 million as fine payments for the same period last year. This is a decrease compared to 2019, as a reduction in fines was observed due to Covid-19 restrictions placed nationwide. However, the number of fines in Malé City have started to increase again, with the releases on protective measures.

Recently, the authorities have also increased the fines for violation of Covid-19 restrictions.

The highest number of fines are expected from various traffic violations. Other categories include violation of laws and violation of agreements as well as fine on loans.

It was initially predicted that MVR 43.9 million will be received as fines in 2021. Since the amount was surpassed mid-year, authorities expect that by the end, a large number of funds will be collected in fine payments.
