MP Jeehaan elected to IPU’s Democracy and Human Rights Committee

Malé, Maldives – MP of Hinnavaru Constituency and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Gender and Human Rights Jeehaan Mahmood has been elected as a Democracy and Human Rights Committee Member of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU).

For the first time in Maldives’ history, a Maldivian parliamentarian has been elected for the Human Rights Committee of IPU from the Asia Pacific Group. MP Jeehaan’s name was sent for the membership of that committee by the People’s Parliament of the Maldives and she will be a member of the Committee until April 2023.

IPU is an international organization of national parliaments. Its primary purpose is to promote democratic governance, accountability, and cooperation among its members. As of 2020, the national parliaments of 179 countries are members of the IPU, while 13 regional parliamentary assemblies are associate members.
