President Solih calls upon Maldivians to unite against extremists

Male’, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih today said that extremist views contradict the belief of Islam and called upon the people to unite and stand up against these groups.

The President said that, at the same time, spreading Islamophobic hate speech is a treacherous act that divides the people and stated that such acts cannot be tolerated.

The statement from President Solih comes while speaking on the occasion of the Maldives’ 56th Anniversary of Independence. President Solih extended greetings and well wishes to the citizens of Maldives and noted that every Maldivian victory in pursuit of independence for the nation is a result of the country’s faith in Islam and the bonds of unity amongst the people.

President Solih stated that although the actions of some radical groups promoting extremist views amongst the people, such views contradict the belief of Islam and hence, President Solih  called upon the people to unite and stand up against these groups. 

He further stated that spreading Islamophobic hate speech is a treacherous act that divides the people and that neither of these acts would be tolerated.

These two issues cannot be resolved by only pursuing legal action but rather by following the true teachings of Islam.

President Solih also revealed that the efforts of the government’s are focused on identifying and incorporating Islamic values into the education sector to best assist parents in nurturing their children to adopt the true Islamic teachings of compassion from an early age.
