HDC maintains Hiya flat rent amid public protests

Male’, Maldives – Housing Development Cooperation (HDC) today stated that they cannot decrease the rent for the Hiya flats in Hulhumale’ phase 2 even if the public protests.

Several owners of the Hiya flat protested yesterday in front of the flats, stating that MVR 8,500 is too expensive as rent and called onto decrease it to MVR 5,600.

Regarding the protest, the Managing Director of HDC, Suhail Ahmed noted that they have already given several easements for the owners of Hiya flats and stated that HDC cannot decrease the rent.

While several complaints have already been filed over the expensive rent of Hiya flats, HDC has already provided several easements for the owners such as not taking rent until next year.

While the incumbent government decided to take MVR 7,500 as rent from the Hiyaa flat owners for 25 years, along with MVR 1,000 as flat management fee, the previous government had stated that MVR 5,600 would be the rent for Hiyaa flats.

HDC earlier announced that citizens can start using the Hiya flats in Hulhumale’ Phase 2 from August 17 onwards, adding that residents can start finishing of Hiya flats on Tuesday.
