Male’, Maldives – Opposition coalition, PPM/PNC have decided to protest tonight over the negligence of the Gender Ministry of Maldives in fulfilling their responsibilities.

Speaking at a press conference held on Saturday evening, MP for Hoarafushi Constituency, Mohamed Ismail announced that a protest will begin at 20:30 on Sunday night over the incidents that have been happening in the country due to the negligence of the Gender Ministry.

Noting that the protest has no political aim, MP Ismail stated that the Opposition is trying to revive the regulations and policies that are being gradually lost in the country.

The decision from the Opposition coalition comes after the wards of the state children’s shelter “Fiyavathi” climbed the roof of the building in a standoff against authorities demanding change to rules. The situation escalated as children set a fire inside the premises and refused to obey the police who attended to the scene. The Child and Family Protection Service revealed that the children ave been exhibiting issues for the past few days, however, mentioned that all the children involved in the issue are in good health.

While multiple criticism has been pointed towards Gender Minister, Aishath Mohamed Didi, the Opposition members have also called out the Minister to resign from her position.
