Parliament unanimously greenlights bill to criminalize hate crimes

Malé, Maldives – The Parliament of Maldives today voted to pass the bill to criminalize religiously motivated hate crimes and criminalize the mockery of Islam.

On November 7, the Judiciary Committee of the Parliament of Maldives proposed major amendments to the original bill to criminalize hate crimes by combining the bills to criminalize religiously motivated hate crimes and criminalize the mockery of Islam together and published a report detailing the amendments.

The newly passed bill allows the preaching of Islam by explaining the tenets and teachings when it comes to the issue of renouncing Islam which was not included in the original bill proposed.

The newly amended bill was passed unanimously by all 50 members present with no against votes.
