Gender Ministry advises against Women’s Day activities promoting gender stereotypes

Malé, Maldives – Maldives Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services has advised against celebratory activities that promote gender stereotypes for International Women’s Day 2022.

The Ministry released a circular on 27 February 2022 stating that 2022 Women’s Day activities must adhere to the slogan “Gender equality for a sustainable tomorrow” and must not promote gender stereotypes.

Gender Ministry highlighted a number of activities that must not be conducted including,

  • Using a gender specific color (pink) in celebrations
  • Welcoming female employees with red carpets; gifting roses, chocolates, cakes.
  • Giving kitchen appliances (plates, pots, cutlery) and cleaning supplies (brooms, mops) as presents.

The Ministry urged to hold celebrations in adherence to the Gender Equality slogan.
