Sri Lanka – Former President and incumbent Speaker of the Maldives Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday offered to secure international relief for Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe accepted Speaker Nasheed’s offer and appointed him as liaison to coordinate relief efforts.
The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the decision was made during discussions held today between the Speaker and Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also thanked Speaker Nasheed for his continued support for the neighbouring nation during its time of crisis.
Wickremesinghe was appointed as Sri Lanka’s 26th prime minister on Thursday, two days after the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa following violent protests due to the economic crisis.
