Sri Lanka – Speaker of the Maldives Parliament Mohamed Nasheed departed for Sri Lanka on Friday at the invitation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Ambassador-at-Large Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed also accompanied the Speaker on this trip. While the parliament confirms Nasheed’s departure, the purpose of this visit remains confidential.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe appointed Speaker Nasheed as liaison to coordinate relief efforts for Sri Lanka amid the country’s worst economic crisis in recent history in May 2022.
Nasheed also visited Sri Lanka and met with political figureheads last month.
