Malé, Maldives – MP for Addu Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam has accused Speaker of Parliament and former President, Mohamed Nasheed of being the most autocratic Speaker to date.

Speaking at todays parliament sitting, MP Rozaina told that works of parliament have been influenced by Speaker Nasheed to a level where she cannot stay silent without pointing the facts out.

During her time debating on the Evidence Act bill, MP Rozaina told that parliament sittings were not going according to the parliaments regulation while Speaker Nasheed presides.

She also told that she has been working as an MP for nearly 15 years and since this parliament has been elected that Nasheed has been running parliament as a president runs the President’s Office.

When this parliament was elected, Nasheed told that he’d run it as how he sees fit. That’s how things are going here now. I do understand that he [Speaker Nasheed] is a former President of Maldives. But he cannot do things here [at the parliament] as how he did things at the President’s Office.

MP Rozaina Adam, who is also the President of Maldivian Democratic Party’s Women’s Wing has been highly vocal against Speaker Nasheed in the recent times. Rozaina had previously spoken against Speaker Nasheed following Nasheed’s allegations of receiving explicit pictures of President Solih after his younger brother was arrested over homosexuality.

Speaker Nasheed had also proposed to remove MP of Addu Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam from the party back in 2020.

Nasheed called for her dismissal after major differences in opinion arose between MP Rozaina, who is a long-serving member of MDP and Nasheed. He announced his proposal to remove rozaina from the party in on a WhatsApp group of MDP where he said, “I propose the dismissal of Rozaina from MDP.”

The move against MP Rozaina comes not long after Nasheed’s attempts to oust Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail from his post through a motion of no confidence were commenced. The move had also led to stark differences within MDP, with some MPs supporting Minister Fayyaz.

Nasheed has also directed attacks at MP Rozaina. A message sent to the Whatsapp group of MDP parliamentarians read that “no member would be caught in the trap” set by MP Rozaina. He added that he himself was not a child and that he would not allow separate powerbases and networks inside the party to exist.

MP Rozaina signed as a member of MDP on November 21, 2013 after serving as the deputy leader of DRP. After joining MDP, MP Rozaina had said that one of the reasons why she was proud to be a part of MDP was the courage shown by Nasheed, who had recently been ousted from the Presidency. MP Rozaina’s spouse MP for Kinbidhoo Ahmed Nashiz is also a member of MDP.
