Man jailed for 15 years for statutory rape

Malé, Maldives – Criminal Court of Maldives has sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for statutory rape.

The Criminal Court did not disclose details of the case as it is a juvenile case.

The Criminal Court said the verdict was handed down against Shamil Adam, of Roshanivila, AA. Dhihdhoo. He was charged with having sexual intercourse with a child while being a person in a position of trust.

Although he pleaded not guilty to the charges in this case, all the evidence submitted by the prosecution to prove the case proved him guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

He was therefore sentenced to 15 years in prison.

As Shamil Adam has spent 03 years, 03 months and 13 days in custody, the sentence was reduced to 11 years, 8 months and 17 days after deduction of the time spent in custody during the trial.

He was also charged with intentionally touching the body of a child with sexual intent. However, he was not convicted of the charge.
