Malé, Maldives – Election Commission (EC) of Maldives has issued a statement saying that it is investigating cases of burglary and theft of a security room of the commission.
The Election Commission said in a statement that a man broke into the security room of the commission on 30th last month. The commission’s warehouse in the old building of Arabiyya School was broken into on the 10th of this month.
EC said the warehouse was broken into and a large number of items were stolen. Five netbooks, 11 UPS, two 65-inch TVs, two speaker sets and a 10-meter extension board were stolen.
“Following these two incidents of theft, in order to ensure the safety and security of the upcoming elections, the commission will continue to do all it can to strengthen the security of the buildings where its work takes place in collaboration with relevant institutions,” it said in a statement.
The Election Commission said the security room was not being used for any election purposes.
The incident will not affect any upcoming elections, the Election Commission said. Police are currently investigating the matter, the EC said in a statement.
In addition, the Election Commission has discussed with the police measures to be taken to prevent such incidents and further strengthening of security.
